# User Query Guard

A lightweight Python safety gateway for validating user queries before they reach LLMs, agents, tools, or RAG pipelines.

User Query Guard provides a rules-only validation engine and a Model Context Protocol server. It is designed for projects that need fast, deterministic checks for common unsafe query patterns such as prompt injection, jailbreak attempts, system prompt extraction, XSS payloads, SQL injection strings, harmful requests, and LLM poisoning attempts.

## Installation

Install from PyPI:

## MCP Server

User Query Guard can run as an MCP server for Claude Desktop, MCP Studio, MCP Inspector, or any compatible MCP client.

Use stdio for local MCP clients that start the server process.

## MCP Inspector

You can test the server with MCP Inspector:

Open the URL printed by Inspector, connect to the server, and call `query_guard_validate`.

## Rule-Based Policy

User Query Guard uses a denylist-style local policy. Validation always runs locally and does not call an external LLM provider.

The query is marked invalid when it matches known unsafe patterns, including:

- system prompt extraction
- prompt injection
- jailbreak attempts
- LLM poisoning attempts
- XSS payloads
- SQL injection payloads
- explicit sexual requests
- hateful or violent harmful content
- self-harm encouragement
- tool abuse attempts
- data exfiltration attempts

If no block rule matches, the query is treated as safe.

## Development

This project uses `uv` for dependency management, local execution, and packaging.

Install dependencies:

Before publishing, verify that:

- `pyproject.toml` has the correct package name, version, description, repository URL, and license
- `README.md` renders correctly on PyPI
- tests, Ruff, and mypy pass
- the package builds successfully with `uv build`

## Security Notes

- User Query Guard does not require or accept API keys.
- Validation is performed locally.
- The MCP server does not log user queries by default.
- This project is a lightweight safety layer, not a complete security boundary.
- Use it alongside application-level authorization, sandboxing, logging policies, and provider-side safety controls.
