Pick a session on the left.
Coding agents are on by default; chat apps are off until you enable them. The store path is where the agent keeps its sessions. Defaults are per operating system ( here): ~, %APPDATA% and $VARS are expanded, and the resolved path is shown under each field. An environment variable ($ECTYPE_…_HOME) always wins over a saved path. Resume format is the file an export can be written back as, so that agent can pick the conversation up.

Budget table columns (tokens is always shown):
Defaults for the redact switch on the toolbar; you can override any rule there for a single export. Rules are computed from this machine (nothing is hard-coded). Every match is recorded; click a rule's count to see exactly what it replaced.
Custom words, one per line: text becomes [REDACTED], text=Alias becomes Alias:

ectype summarize, the Summary button and ectype search extract what happened with no model. When the agent itself wrote a summary between a pair of markers in one of its own turns (the closing summary a session-end rule asks for), that text is quoted first, because it is the agent's account of what mattered; every such block in a session is quoted, in order. The markers to look for, one per line, as literal text: the default is %%SUMMARY%%, which holds no character Markdown gives a meaning to, so a rendered reply shows it exactly as written; several are fine; an empty box switches the section off. A change here reaches the kept summaries the next time ectype search or summarize --all runs.

summarize --all
Asking an agent to write one. An agent writes a closing summary only when its instructions ask for it. This is the paragraph that asks, for the first marker above; copy it into any agent's instruction file, or let ectype add it to the files you pick below (ectype summary-rule on the command line). ectype writes it inside a block it owns, never changes anything outside that block, backs the file up first, and leaves alone a file that already asks in its own words.

Every ectype backup, and every copy an install takes by itself (Codex's index, Cline's index), is one folder under the settings directory. By default they are all kept; set a limit here and it applies each time a new backup is taken, or on demand with ectype backup --prune. The newest folder is never removed by the age rule alone.

ectype backup --prune
ectype recall
How a session is brought into an agent's conversation when you type /ectype <id>: every option the toolbar has, with defaults of its own. Out of the box it brings in the conversation alone, your questions' answers and other sessions' messages included, and no tool name at all. Options typed after the id win over these. They take effect at once, on Save: the command file does not change with them, so Install is needed only for a new command name or after ectype itself was updated.
/ectype <id>
A final message appended to exports and conversions that tells the model the session was imported, so it re-checks its environment before acting. Generic = one sentence; detailed = one bullet per item.

Converting to a different agent rewrites the conversation in that agent's own format so it can resume it. It is lossy by design: your messages and the assistant's text are carried verbatim; tool calls and results become short bracketed notes; thinking, injected context and notices are dropped; images are not carried. Every conversion comes with a fidelity report that counts exactly what was kept, folded and dropped.
Exporting to the agent the session came from is not affected; that is a copy, and nothing is lost.
Check the conversion table for the fate of each element and the verified agent versions. Agent formats are undocumented internals and can change with any release.
