The patient, who had previously been treated for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, osteoarthritis of the knee, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and mild depression, presented to the emergency department with a three-day history of progressively worsening right lower quadrant abdominal pain accompanied by anorexia, low-grade fever, and one episode of non-bloody emesis, and was found on computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis to have acute appendicitis with a small periappendiceal abscess, for which he underwent laparoscopic appendectomy without complication and was discharged home on postoperative day two with a course of oral amoxicillin-clavulanate.
