Jesse returns to his aunt's house, where he has been living, only to discover that his parents have changed the locks. His mother and father, having learned about the DEA search and Jesse's connection to a drug investigation, inform him that he is no longer welcome and must vacate the property, which they own. Jesse pleads with them, insisting he has nowhere else to go, but his father stands firm. Jesse packs a bag and leaves, beginning a downward spiral of homelessness. He crashes at Skinny Pete's place briefly, then at a series of increasingly squalid locations, eventually sleeping in the RV, which is parked in a tow yard. Jesse retrieves the RV by paying the towing fee with what little cash he has left. Walt, back at home, tries to reestablish his normal life but finds the domestic environment suffocating. Skyler is attentive but watchful, and Walt's attempts at intimacy are rebuffed because Skyler senses something fundamentally dishonest in his fugue-state story. She begins quietly investigating on her own, checking phone records and credit card statements for inconsistencies. Walt returns to teaching at J.P. Wynne High School, where his colleagues treat him with gentle sympathy for his cancer and his supposed mental health episode. Walt contacts Jesse to discuss resuming their meth operation, but Jesse, bitter and destitute, refuses, blaming Walt for the destruction of his life. Jesse's deteriorating situation reaches a low point when he is robbed of his remaining cash by a group at a house where he sought shelter. He tries to contact his parents one more time, visiting their home, but his mother calls the police and Jesse flees. Walt discovers that his medical bills are mounting and his insurance coverage is inadequate for the treatment his oncologist recommends. Skyler suggests they accept financial help from Walt's former business partners Elliott and Gretchen Schwartz, wealthy founders of Gray Matter Technologies, the company Walt co-founded and left years ago. Walt bristles at the idea but does not outright refuse. Jesse, now truly desperate, calls Walt and agrees to restart the meth business, on the condition that they operate as equal partners with a fifty-fifty split. Walt agrees.
