Ned confronts Cersei directly in the godswood, telling her he knows her children are Jaime's and that he intends to tell Robert the truth. He offers her the chance to flee with her children before Robert returns from his hunt, an act of mercy driven by his refusal to see children harmed. Cersei responds coldly that in the game of thrones, you win or you die, and makes no move to leave. Robert Baratheon is brought back to the Red Keep mortally wounded by a boar during the hunt, too drunk to defend himself properly. On his deathbed, Robert dictates his will to Ned, naming Ned Protector of the Realm until Joffrey comes of age. Ned writes "rightful heir" instead of Joffrey's name, planning to install Robert's brother Stannis, the true heir, once Robert dies. Robert dies, and Ned sends a letter to Stannis at Dragonstone informing him of the truth about Cersei's children. Ned needs allies to enforce the succession and turns to Littlefinger, asking him to secure the City Watch's loyalty. Littlefinger advises Ned to make peace with the Lannisters and rule through Joffrey, but Ned refuses to compromise with what he sees as a usurper. Renly Baratheon, Robert's younger brother, offers Ned the backing of his household guard to seize Joffrey before the Lannisters can act. Ned refuses this too, unwilling to frighten a child with soldiers in the night. Renly flees King's Landing. In the Dothraki lands, King Robert's assassination attempt reaches Daenerys: a wine merchant tries to poison her, but Jorah Mormont, warned by a message from Varys, intervenes and exposes the plot. The assassination attempt enrages Drogo, who vows to cross the Narrow Sea, conquer Westeros, and place his unborn son on the Iron Throne. At Castle Black, the bodies of two dead rangers are brought inside the Wall. In the night, the corpses reanimate as wights. Jon fights one that attacks the Lord Commander, saving his life by setting the creature on fire. The threat beyond the Wall is no longer rumor.
