Ned enters the throne room to present Robert's will naming him Protector of the Realm, expecting the City Watch to back his claim. Cersei tears up the will and declares Joffrey king. On Littlefinger's signal, the gold cloaks of the City Watch turn on Ned's men, killing his household guard. Littlefinger puts a dagger to Ned's throat, telling him he warned not to trust him. Ned is arrested and imprisoned in the dungeons beneath the Red Keep. Sansa, unaware of the full betrayal, is kept in her chambers under Lannister guard. Arya escapes the purge because Syrio Forel fights the Lannister soldiers with a wooden practice sword, buying her time to flee. Syrio is overwhelmed and presumably killed. Arya recovers Needle and hides in the streets of King's Landing. Across the Narrow Sea, Drogo's khalasar raids a village to fund the invasion of Westeros. Daenerys is horrified by the violence and orders the Dothraki to stop raping the captive women, taking them under her protection. This defiance angers Drogo's warriors, and one of his bloodriders, Mago, challenges the order. Drogo fights Mago in single combat, killing him bare-handed despite taking a chest wound to prove his dominance. A captive healer named Mirri Maz Duur offers to treat Drogo's wound, and Daenerys accepts her help. At Castle Black, Lord Commander Mormont rewards Jon with a Valyrian steel sword, Longclaw, for saving his life from the wight. Jon receives word that his father has been arrested for treason in King's Landing and attempts to desert to join Robb's war. Sam, Grenn, and Pyp ride after him in the night and convince him to honor his vow. Tyrion and Bronn encounter the hill tribes in the mountains of the Vale. Rather than fight, Tyrion recruits them by promising his father Tywin's gold and weapons, turning potential enemies into allies. He arrives at his father Tywin Lannister's war camp, where Tywin is assembling an army to march against the Riverlands in response to Catelyn's seizure of Tyrion and Ned's sentencing of Gregor Clegane.
