MMS crosses the bow shock

Real MMS1 data, 1 December 2017: the spacecraft leaves the magnetosphere through the magnetopause, crosses the magnetosheath, then the bow shock seven times, and ends in the solar wind. The orbit is drawn with two models, the Shue et al. (1998) magnetopause and the Jelínek et al. (2012) bow shock. Hover the time series to follow MMS1; move the sliders to change the solar wind.

━ magnetopause, Shue et al. (1998) · ━ bow shock, Jelínek et al. (2012) · GSE, Earth radii · Y-Z shows both at the spacecraft's X · no aberration
