This section examines how participants described their initial entry into climbing communities, including the role of social connections in sustaining their engagement with the sport over time. Several recurring patterns emerged across interviews, suggesting that social bonds formed through climbing often become as important as the physical activity itself.
"I started maybe six years ago at a local indoor gym. A friend dragged me along and I was honestly terrible at first, but there was something about the problem-solving aspect that really hooked me. Each route is like a puzzle you solve with your body."
The transition from indoor to outdoor climbing was described by most participants as a significant milestone. Three participants explicitly mentioned that the social support of their climbing group was what gave them the confidence to attempt their first outdoor route. Without that encouragement, they said they would have remained exclusively indoor climbers.
