## What is Nightjar?

Nightjar is a verification orchestrator for Python. You write a behavioral spec — a `.card.md` file. Nightjar runs six stages of automated checking and tells you whether your code satisfies the spec for all inputs, not just the ones you tested.

Nightjar implements contractual computing: the spec is the only permanent artifact. Code is disposable — regenerated from specs and mathematically proven on every build. The more you specify, the more Nightjar can prove.

For existing code, `nightjar scan` extracts contracts automatically via AST analysis — no spec writing required to start. `nightjar audit` scores any PyPI package A–F. See the [spec format reference](docs/spec-format.md) when you're ready to write specs by hand.

Python 3.11+. Dafny 4.x is optional — without it, Nightjar falls back to CrossHair and Hypothesis and still gives you a confidence score.

Nightjar's verification approach — property-based testing, symbolic execution, and formal proof — found 74 bugs across 34 packages. Every finding has a standalone reproduction script. Zero false positives.

All 62 fullwidth alphanumerics (U+FF10–U+FF5A) fold silently to their ASCII equivalents. An attacker registers `vit\uff41lik.eth`. Victim's wallet resolves it to the attacker's address — and the display shows `vitalik.eth`. Direct ETH address hijacking vector. `compile_restricted()` does not block `import os` at compile time. Sandbox integrity is 100% dependent on the caller providing safe guard functions. `_getattr_ = getattr` is the first example on StackOverflow. One line of documentation misread = arbitrary code execution. ## Clean codebases — what disciplined code looks like

Not every codebase has bugs. These packages passed verification with zero violations:

Nightjar finds the gap between what code claims and what it does. These repos have a small gap.

## How it works

Nightjar coordinates Hypothesis (property-based testing), CrossHair (symbolic execution), and Dafny (formal verification) — you don't learn any of them. You write what the code should do. Nightjar proves whether it does.

The pipeline runs six stages cheapest-first and short-circuits on the first failure:

When Dafny fails, the CEGIS loop extracts the concrete counterexample and feeds it into the next repair prompt. Simple functions skip Dafny and route to CrossHair (~70% faster) — routing is automatic based on cyclomatic complexity. A behavioral safety gate blocks any regeneration that silently drops invariants the previous version proved.

Nightjar dogfoods its own pipeline: CI runs `nightjar verify` on the specs in `.card/`. If Nightjar's own code violates a property, Nightjar's own CI fails.

## The Origin

I'm 19. I vibecoded Nightjar in 62 hours using Claude Code. I directed 38 AI agents in parallel. I wrote zero lines of Python by hand.

Then I pointed it at 34 popular Python packages and found 74 real bugs — including JWT tokens from 1970 accepted as valid, budget limits that never reset, ENS names that silently resolve to the wrong Ethereum address, and a hardcoded secret key shipping in production defaults.

The irony isn't lost on me: I can't write Python, so I built a tool that mathematically proves Python is correct.

Every line of code in this repo was generated by AI. Every line has a spec. Every spec has a proof.

That's the point. AI-generated code is probabilistically correct. Formal methods make it provably correct. The solution isn't abandoning AI. It's requiring mathematical proof alongside generation.
