# avervox (alias package)

The product is **AverVOX**; its Python package and command are **`avrvx`**.

This package exists so that installing `avervox` works too. It contains no
code of its own — it depends on [`avrvx`](https://pypi.org/project/avrvx/)
and provides the same `avrvx` and `avervox` commands, so installing either
name gives you the same application.

```bash
pipx install --system-site-packages avervox   # same result as: pipx install --system-site-packages avrvx
```

`--system-site-packages` is required: it lets pipx's environment see the
system PyGObject (`python3-gi`), which is installed with apt, not pip. A bare
`pip install` outside a virtual environment fails on Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 12+
and Linux Mint 22 with `error: externally-managed-environment` (PEP 668).

You also need the system dependencies (GTK, xdotool, xclip, portaudio,
pulseaudio-utils, python3-dev). On Mint/Ubuntu the easiest route is the
project's `install.sh`, which installs everything except `pulseaudio-utils`
(preinstalled on most desktops; `sudo apt install pulseaudio-utils` if
`avrvx --doctor` reports it missing). `python3-dev` is needed to compile
`evdev`, a `pynput` dependency. See the
[AverVOX README](https://github.com/avrvx/AverVOX-OSS#installation) for details.
