How we restored the mill wheel

The wheel had not turned since 1962. Volunteers spent two summers replacing forty-eight paddles, each cut from oak felled on the estate, and the bearings came from a foundry in Halifax that still casts them by hand.

On the first of September the sluice opened, and the wheel turned for the first time in sixty-four years. Around two hundred people came to watch.
