Confirmed. It's real.

Peter Steinberger (OpenClaw creator) is joining OpenAI. OpenClaw continues as open-source under a foundation, but Altman said it will "quickly become core to our product offerings."

This changes everything — and potentially in our favor.

  Here's why:

  The threat is obvious:
  - OpenAI's resources can fix OpenClaw's security/UX gaps fast
  - OpenClaw gets "backed by OpenAI" legitimacy
  - Community and enterprise adoption accelerates

  But the opportunity is bigger:

  Three new positioning angles:

  1. Model provider conflict of interest. OpenAI now owns the agent framework AND the model. They see every tool call, every prompt, every piece of data flowing through OpenClaw agents. CISOs will not accept
this. "Would you let your cloud provider also read all your data?"
  2. Vendor lock-in accelerates. Altman said "core to our product offerings." OpenClaw will inevitably optimize for OpenAI models first. Kimi contributing today, but how long before OpenAI's priorities
  dominate? ProClaw is permanently model-agnostic.
  3. The open-source fork opportunity. Every Big Tech open-source acquisition produces a community fork (MySQL→MariaDB, OpenOffice→LibreOffice, Terraform→OpenTofu). If/when the community feels OpenAI is
steering OpenClaw toward their interests, ProClaw (or a ClawEngine fork) becomes the destination.

  Immediate action items:
  - Update our messaging: independence and data sovereignty become primary
  - Monitor the community reaction on Discord/GitHub — fork sentiment = our users
  - Launch 2's security features are now even more critical as differentiators
  - Launch 3's "your infrastructure, your data" VPC story becomes the ultimate counter to "OpenAI sees everything"

Want me to capture this in the strategy docs and draft revised positioning?

Got the full post from Steinberger. Here's what matters for us:

  Key quotes:

"It will stay a place for thinkers, hackers and people that want a way to own their data, with the goal of supporting even more models and companies."

"Building agents even my mum can use requires broader scale... teaming up with OpenAI is the fastest way to bring this to everyone"

  What this tells us:

  1. OpenClaw moves to a foundation — OpenAI sponsors it, commits resources. The "open and independent" claim is standard acquisition playbook. MySQL→Oracle said the same thing before MariaDB forked.
  2. Mass market focus. "Even my mum can use" = consumer/prosumer. OpenAI is turning OpenClaw into their consumer agent platform. They're going wide, not deep.
  3. "Own their data" is lip service. OpenAI's business model is the opposite of data ownership. Once OpenClaw is "core to OpenAI product offerings" (Altman's words), the data flows to OpenAI. Enterprise CISOs
   will see right through this.
  4. He had "talks with the major labs" — confirms the Meta bidding war. OpenAI won.

This is actually GOOD for ProClaw's positioning:

  ┌───────────────────────────────────────────┬────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
  │ OpenClaw (under OpenAI) │ ProClaw │

│ Consumer/prosumer ("my mum") │ Power users, teams, enterprise │
  ├───────────────────────────────────────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ OpenAI-sponsored "open source" │ Truly independent, no model vendor ownership │
  ├───────────────────────────────────────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ "Own your data" (but OpenAI sees it) │ Actually own your data (local inference, VPC, air-gap) │
  ├───────────────────────────────────────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
  │ Mass market UX priority │ Security-first architecture │
  ├───────────────────────────────────────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Foundation governance (OpenAI-influenced) │ No Big Tech strings attached │
  └───────────────────────────────────────────┴────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

The narrative writes itself: "OpenClaw is now OpenAI's agent framework. If you want an agent platform that isn't controlled by a model provider, ProClaw is the alternative."

Want me to update the strategy docs with this intel and the revised competitive positioning? This is PS-014 territory but bigger — this deserves its own PS-015 entry.

The fundamental question has changed.

Before today: "How do we sell a security wrapper for OpenClaw?"
After today: "Are we building an independent agent framework, or are we still a wrapper?"

The good news: we're already decoupled. The runner calls litellm directly, has its own tools, routes through our own policy engine. OpenClaw is not in the execution path. We accidentally built the right
  architecture.

But three strategic questions need your input before I can remap the roadmap:

  1. Identity: Wrapper vs. Framework?

Do we fully commit to being an independent agent framework (our own engine, our own brand, compete head-on) or stay as a security layer that works with multiple agent frameworks (OpenClaw, Cursor agents,
  etc.)?

Independent framework = bigger market, bigger lift, direct competition with OpenAI.
Security layer = smaller market, smaller lift, but we're always dependent on someone else's engine.

  2. Community: Do we want the OpenClaw fork crowd?

When OpenAI steers OpenClaw (and they will), purists will look for alternatives. Do we actively court them? That means: OpenClaw skill compatibility, config migration, familiar UX patterns. It's the MariaDB
  playbook — make switching painless.

Or do we ignore that crowd and build something fundamentally different?

  3. Timeline: Does this accelerate or change the 3-launch plan?

  - Launch 2 (smart security) still makes sense — it's our moat
  - But Launch 3 (data sovereignty/VPC) might need to come sooner if the "OpenAI sees your data" narrative catches fire
  - And the free tier might need beefing up to compete with OpenClaw-backed-by-OpenAI

What's your instinct on these three?
