Launch Anomaly Disrupts Otherwise Successful Mission
The launch provider could not celebrate the achievement for long. Within a couple of hours of liftoff, it became clear that something had gone wrong with the mission's remaining milestones. The company confirmed that the upper stage had missed its aim and released its payload into an inaccurate orbit.
The spacecraft separation itself completed nominally. Telemetry showed the payload powered on as expected and established initial communications with its ground network a few minutes later. That much, at least, went to plan.
A statement issued by the satellite operator later that day described the orbit as too low to sustain operations with the onboard thrusters alone. The spacecraft will be de-orbited in the coming weeks, and the operator said it expected to recover the undisclosed cost of the satellite under an insurance policy.
What went wrong
The company has not yet described the failure mode in any technical detail. An investigation is underway, and a preliminary report is expected within two weeks. Until that report is released, the nature of the upper-stage anomaly remains unclear.
What is clear is that the first stage of the rocket performed exactly as designed. Reuse had been a major goal of this particular mission, and that portion of the flight went flawlessly, with the booster landing downrange on its recovery vessel as planned.
This is, in other words, a mission that will be remembered both for what it proved and for what it failed to deliver. Both of those lessons matter. The investigation will be closely watched across the industry.
