Teams that adopt anchor based navigation often let their publishing system derive the identifier for each section directly from the title of that section. The generator strips the spaces and joins the words together, producing a single run of letters that no longer carries any obvious boundary between one word and the next. When that identifier is later compared against a list of clutter patterns, the comparison happens on the flattened lowercase form, and any pattern that appears anywhere inside the run will register as a match even though it was never meant to.

The consequence is subtle because most articles never notice it. A pattern only causes trouble when the concatenated title happens to contain it as an interior fragment, and most titles do not. The risk grows with longer, more structured pieces, precisely the kind of writing where a tool like this is most useful. Long form essays tend to use many sections with descriptive headings, and descriptive headings produce longer concatenated identifiers, and longer identifiers are more likely to contain some short clutter pattern purely by coincidence somewhere in the middle of their letters.

The role of things

This section must survive extraction. The fix is to treat an identifier with no delimiters as a single opaque token, matching it against the clutter list only when the whole token is itself a clutter word, while delimited identifiers keep their familiar substring behaviour. That preserves removal of genuine widgets named with hyphenated or underscored identifiers, and it stops the extractor from amputating real prose whose only crime was a title that happened to spell a short pattern somewhere inside its letters.

This delimited widget id should still be removed because its identifier contains a real delimiter, so the substring match still applies and correctly recognises it as clutter.
