================

PyAthena's early development was informed by PyHive, including its DB-API
tests and implementation patterns. PyAthena has since evolved with substantial
Athena-specific functionality and additional backends.

PyHive: https://github.com/dropbox/PyHive

The initial PyAthena commit (35a221629783ac8e7997cddce0599ec84e39963d) linked
to PyHive sources from its formatter, SQLAlchemy dialect, and tests. Those
parts were compared with the contemporaneous PyHive revision
ae3c9a9645ebd3dc962060d498df73e96498d615.
Parts that remain recognizable in PyAthena:

- pyathena/formatter.py: the string escape rules of `_escape_trino`
  follow PyHive's `ParamEscaper.escape_string`
  (pyhive/common.py), and `_escape_hive` follows PyHive's `HiveParamEscaper`
  (pyhive/hive.py).
- pyathena/sqlalchemy/compiler.py: `visit_char_length_func`, which renders
  `char_length` as `length`, follows PyHive's `PrestoCompiler`
  (pyhive/sqlalchemy_presto.py).
- tests/pyathena/test_cursor.py: test cases including the escaping input of
  `test_escape`, the Unicode input of `test_unicode`, and the NULL patterns of
  `test_null` follow PyHive's pyhive/tests/dbapi_test_case.py.
- tests/pyathena/sqlalchemy/test_base.py: test cases including
  `test_unicode`, `test_char_length`, and `test_reflect_no_such_table` follow
  PyHive's pyhive/tests/sqlalchemy_test_case.py.
  tests/pyathena/aio/sqlalchemy/test_base.py ports `test_unicode` to the
  asynchronous dialect.

Parts that have since been replaced:

- The `UniversalSet` helper and its use as the SQLAlchemy identifier
  preparer's reserved words, removed in
  d29c9ef97efb2168998eccdfa67d7706d381d655.

DB-API names, the exception hierarchy, and type objects shared with PyHive
follow PEP 249 (https://peps.python.org/pep-0249/).

pyathena/util.py: `strtobool` was ported in

which was removed from the Python standard library by PEP 632

Files without a license header
==============================

Files that carry the header "Copyright <year> The PyAthena authors" with
"SPDX-License-Identifier: MIT" contain only original work by the PyAthena
authors. The year is the file's first publication year, or for files that
existed before the header was introduced, the year of their earliest
surviving content.

Other files do not carry that header. They are distributed under the MIT
License in LICENSE, together with any notice above that applies to them.
They include:

- files containing contributions from other contributors, whose authorship
  is recorded in the Git history;
- files containing the third-party material described above;
- files of generated origin, such as docs/conf.py, which started as
  sphinx-quickstart output, and lock files;
- empty files, symbolic links, binary and data files, and the pull request
  template.

The classification of each file is recorded in
https://github.com/pyathena-dev/PyAthena/issues/790.
