CougarMap - find mountain lion hotspots with your AI assistant
=============================================================

WHAT IT DOES
Ask your AI assistant something like:
"Find me the cougar hotspots near Missoula, MT"
"Scan my property at 47.3712, -116.1029"
"Look at the North Ridge area in my Google Earth file"
It studies the terrain (wind, cold air drainage, edges, pinch points, water), picks the best
trail-camera spots within a mile's walk of an open road, explains why each one is good, and makes
a Google Earth file with the spots, walking routes and map layers.

It works with any of these AI apps: Claude (desktop app, Cowork or Claude Code), ChatGPT/Codex,
Gemini CLI, Google Antigravity or Cursor. You need at least one of them.

INSTALL (one time, about 5 minutes)
  Mac: double-click "Install CougarMap.command"
(if the Mac blocks it: right-click it -> Open -> Open)
  Windows:  right-click  install.ps1  ->  "Run with PowerShell"

The installer:
  1. installs "uv", a small free tool that runs Python programs (from astral.sh)
  2. installs CougarMap
  3. connects CougarMap to the AI apps it finds on your computer
Then quit and reopen your AI app.

  * Claude Cowork only: in the Claude app go to Customize -> Plugins and upload
Documents/CougarMap/cougarmap-cowork-plugin.zip (the installer makes this file).
  * The first time your AI app uses CougarMap it may ask permission - say "Always allow".

USING IT
  - The first search in a new area takes a few minutes (it downloads map and satellite data).
After that it's under a minute. The assistant will tell you it's working.
  - Your results (Google Earth .kmz files) go in Documents/CougarMap/results
  - To use your own Google Earth pins (water, scrapes, cameras), tell the assistant:
"Import my Google Earth file at <path to the .kml>"
  - Tell it what your cameras catch ("my camera at <lat, lon> got a lion on Oct 3"). That's how the
    model gets better.
  - The ranked spots are on public land. Spots on private land (like your property) are listed
separately and sit in a map layer that starts switched off.

USING IT WITHOUT AN AI APP (Terminal)
Open a new Terminal window (PowerShell on Windows) and type:
    cougarmap hotspots "Missoula, MT"
    cougarmap hotspots 47.3712, -116.1029 --radius-km 30
Coordinates are latitude, longitude, as Google Maps copies them (west longitudes are negative).
When it finishes, the map opens in Google Earth Pro (free: https://www.google.com/earth/about/versions/),
and its file is in Documents/CougarMap/results. Type cougarmap --help for everything else.

PRIVACY
Everything runs on your computer. It only downloads public map data (USGS, Forest Service,
OpenStreetMap, weather). Your camera locations stay in Documents/CougarMap.

UNINSTALL
Run cougarmap setup --uninstall in Terminal, then uv tool uninstall cougarmap
