# ADAPT-Agent

**A**dversarial **D**efense &amp; **P**olicy **T**raining for LLM **Agent**s — a security and governance toolkit for LLM agents.

ADAPT-Agent is a Python library that adds a layer of security and governance controls around LLM agents. It provides a firewall for screening inputs and outputs, a policy engine for enforcing rules on agent messages and state, adversarial-attack detection (prompt injection / jailbreak), trust scoring, taint tracking, and observability — plus framework adapters that wrap an existing agent so these controls run automatically on every execution.

The library keeps its core install light and imports each agent framework **lazily** — only when you actually wrap and run an agent. You can `import adapt_agent` and use the security, governance, and optimization layers without installing LangGraph, Pydantic AI, CrewAI, or any other supported framework; you install the extra for the framework you actually use. Core utilities the toolkit needs to do its job (e.g. `typing-extensions`, and `pyyaml` for the YAML training config) are installed as ordinary dependencies.

## Features

### Core
- **`TrustManager`** — track and update trust scores for agents and sources.
- **`PolicyEnforcer`** — define rules (name, description, condition, action, severity) and evaluate them against messages and agent state using a safe, sandboxed condition evaluator (no `eval`).
- **`MemorySystem`** — structured memory for agent context.
- **`Middleware`** — a pre/post processing pipeline applied to inputs and outputs.

### Security
- **`Firewall`** — input/output filtering with blocked/allowed regex patterns, custom filters, and a configurable maximum content length (DoS protection). Records security events.
- **`TaintTracker`** — track tainted (untrusted) data through an agent, with `TaintLevel` and `TaintSource` classifications.

### Adversarial defense
- **`AdversarialDefense`** — detect prompt injection and jailbreak attempts, plus user-supplied custom attack patterns. `analyze_input(text)` returns a dict with `is_safe`, `threats_detected`, and a truncated input snapshot.

### Observability
- **`AgentObserver`** — tracing (`start_trace`/`end_trace`) and structured logging for agent executions.

### Evaluation
- **`evaluate_agent`** — one-call evals for agents built with **LangGraph,
  Microsoft Agent Framework, Google ADK, Pydantic AI**, CrewAI, the OpenAI
  Agents SDK, or the Claude Agent SDK: deterministic checks against specific
  outputs (`exact_match`, `contains`, `regex_match`, `numeric_close`, …),
  **per-row checks** (each dataset row declares how it is scored via a
  `"check"` field), and/or an **LLM-as-judge** — with framework-native results
  (an `AgentRunResult`, LangGraph state, ADK events, …) unwrapped to final

- **`GoldenDataset` / `EvaluationHarness`** — the underlying engine: load
  golden data from lists / JSON / JSONL / CSV and score with any mix of
  metrics. Re-exported from `adapt_agent.evaluation`.
- **`AgentEvaluator`** — runtime evaluation utilities for agent behaviour.

### Optimization
- **`AgentOptimizer`** — runtime performance-metrics collector + tuning hints.
- **`OptimizableAgent` + optimizers** — wrap any agent (single, six specialists,
  orchestrator + sub-agents, or a workflow, across every supported framework) and
  automatically optimize its prompts, few-shot examples, models, hyperparameters,
  routing/topology, and tools against a golden dataset. Deep per-framework
  introspection turns a live agent into tunable parameters.
- **`LLMJudge`** (provider-agnostic, with `ClaudeJudge` / `OpenAIJudge` /
  `GeminiJudge` / … subclasses) — model-graded scoring **and** judge-driven prompt
  improvement, used at every stage. Backed by pluggable `ModelProvider`s
  (Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure, Gemini, Mistral, Cohere, Groq, Together, Ollama,
  Bedrock, Hugging Face, …) that import their SDK lazily.

- **`PatchManager`** — management of framework-specific patches.

### Agent skill
- **A bundled agent skill.** The wheel ships a `SKILL.md` (plus reference files)
  that teaches a coding agent to use this library. Install it into a project
  with one command and any agent working there picks it up automatically:

## Adapter support matrix

Adapters integrate ADAPT-Agent's controls with third-party agent frameworks. Importing an adapter class never imports the underlying framework; the framework is only imported when you actually wrap and run an agent. Every adapter shares one governance pipeline (input screening → policy → middleware → traced execution → output screening) and the same keyword-only constructor.

Async-only frameworks (Microsoft Agent Framework, Google ADK, Claude Agent SDK) are driven synchronously — coroutines are awaited and async event streams are drained — so `execute` stays synchronous and the firewall scans every result. > **Note:** Each framework extra installs that framework so its adapter can run; `adapt_agent` itself imports a framework only when you wrap an agent from it, so you never need a framework you don't use.

Wrap a compiled LangGraph graph (anything exposing a callable `invoke`) so the firewall, adversarial defense, policy engine, and observer run automatically on every execution:

On each `execute(...)` the adapter performs input screening, policy enforcement, optional pre/post middleware, traced execution via the observer, and output screening. When a control fires (or a `block` policy action triggers) and `block_on_violation=True` (the default), a `SecurityBlockedError` is raised with the list of threats; set `block_on_violation=False` to record threats without blocking.

Validation checks that policy-rule conditions parse as Python expressions, that regex patterns compile, and that `action` (`warn` / `block` / `modify`) and `severity` (`low` / `medium` / `high` / `critical`) values are valid. `firewall.max_content_length` must be a positive integer.
