The problem. Vivid blue filled boxes dominate the layout. When the window loses focus they turn grey — proving they can be quieter.
Option B
Grey box, grey tick
Custom checkbox with light grey border and a grey tick mark. No fill colour at all. The box recedes; the tick is visible but quiet.
Option C
No box — tick or dot
No visible box at all. Checked: a quiet grey tick. Unchecked: a faint dot placeholder so you know it's clickable. Minimal chrome.
Option D — recommended
Ghost box, muted tick
Barely-visible border (lightest grey token). Checked: faint grey fill + grey tick. Unchecked: almost invisible empty box. The box is there for spatial anchoring but never competes with the badge content.
Option E
No checkbox — badge fades
No checkbox at all. Click the entire row. Checked: full opacity badge. Unchecked: faded + desaturated badge. Zero checkbox chrome. But: no standard affordance for "this is a filter" — relies on learned behaviour.
Option F
Tinted ghost — hint of accent
Like D (ghost box) but checked state has a whisper of accent blue — 8% opacity fill, 30% opacity border. Acknowledges "this is a filter control" without the full-blast vivid blue.
