macOS protects folders like Desktop, Documents, Mail and
Photos. Your browser can't read your disk — the local scanner does that, and macOS grants disk
access to the app that launched it:
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access.
- Enable your terminal app (click + and add it from Applications if missing).
- Fully quit and reopen that app — macOS applies the permission on restart.
- Come back here and hit Rescan.
No Terminal involved: run
build_app.command once, then launch Mac Storage Dashboard.app — macOS will ask for access
on behalf of the app itself instead. (Granting your browser Full Disk Access adds nothing here: browsers
are sandboxed and never scan your disk.)
Without Full Disk Access the dashboard still works — blocked
folders are simply skipped and shown as under-reported. Nothing leaves this Mac.
