h5ebsd (kikuchipy, Bruker, EDAX, Oxford .h5oina), EDAX .up1 / .up2, Oxford .ebsp, NORDIF Pattern.dat with Setting.txt. Files are read in place, in pieces; nothing is uploaded. Or drop them anywhere, with a project .json saved under Index to bring its settings and geometry back.

make a toy scan

A scan with a known answer, from the master patterns above: the map is cut into grains, each with an orientation and a phase drawn at random, and every cell's pattern is simulated under the geometry as it stands (Geometry), laid on a background and counted as electrons. That geometry is the scan's true one: set it first, make the scan, then move it and see what the fits bring back; their readouts say how far from the truth they land. A seed is a scan: the same seed and settings make the same one.
