For Magic: The Gathering Arena

A coach in your ear, every turn of the game.

mtgacoach reads your Arena game as you play and talks you through it — attacks, blocks, sequencing, the line you didn't see. Out loud, while it matters, not in a post-mortem.

Cast Emergency Phytomedic, then Ghalta — the Beast makes it cost five. Hold back this turn; Seed Suture next turn, then swing with everything. 0:08 · the turn in the screenshot, rendered by the app's own speech engine (voice: Fenrir)

Free for 7 days — no card, no account. Then $10 a month through Patreon, which also covers ArenaOnAir.

The mtgacoach sidebar during a game: Your turn, T15, Main 1. The Now card reads: Cast Emergency Phytomedic, then Ghalta — the Beast makes it cost five. Hold back this turn; Seed Suture next turn, then swing with everything. Below it: Best line, lethal on turn 19; Outlook 32 percent, behind; Role defender; Clocks, they kill you in 7. The board card shows the opponent at 19 life and you at 7.
The real sidebar, rendered from a board recorded in a pro's Alchemy draft game. Best line, outlook, role and clocks are the app's own math; the advice line is our example for that turn.

Version 3.8.0 · November 2026

Better recovery. More careful decisions.

This release works on the moments that interrupt a game: queue transitions, tricky rules interactions, and advice that doesn't match the cards in front of you.

Keep the match moving

Queue the featured Recent Match through the Mac bridge, and keep restart recovery from navigating away while a match is still unfinished. Equipment plans retain useful equip opportunities and recognize planned haste grants; commander choices check the actual destination zone.

Check the play against the board

Combat forecasts account for blocker lifelink, infect and damage carried into extra combats. Mana checks preserve reserved resources and account for activation costs and known attack taxes. Commentary checks more target, mode and damage claims against the card's rules.

These are targeted fixes. Some rules interactions and live platform checks remain open; this update does not establish Windows gameplay validation. See the release notes for the current validation limits.

What you see while you play

One narrow window beside Arena.

You hear the advice first. The sidebar is the written copy, plus the reasoning behind it.

The full mtgacoach sidebar, numbered from top to bottom: turn strip, model and game-source chips, the Now card, the best line, the game plan, the board, the feed and the controls.
  1. Turn strip

Whose turn it is, the turn number and the phase.

  2. Model and source

The model answering (GLM 5.3 on our server) and where the game state comes from: Log watcher for Arena's own log, Bridge when the autoplay bridge is connected too.

  3. Now

The line it just said out loud, with the time it said it.

  4. Best line

A search over your next three turns and their attacks in between. “Board even” is a weighted board score, not a win chance.

  5. Game plan

Written by the model in the background and checked against board math: outlook (a 0–100 read on the game), role (aggressor, racer or defender), both clocks, the searched line and its alternative, the next three turns and how you win.

  6. Board

Life totals, your hand with mana costs, both sides' creatures with power, toughness and tapped state, and your lands.

  7. Feed

Everything it has said this game, newest at the bottom.

  8. Controls

Autoplay, auto-queue, stop talking, and Voice & style: voice, speed, quick or chatty advice, mute.

What it does

Coaching, drafting, and a pair of hands.

Table talk, out loud

It reads the real game from Arena's log — your hand, both boards, the stack, every legal action — and says the play, so your eyes stay on the game. When their removal targets something you can protect, it tells you to respond before the window closes.

Drafts for the deck, not the tier list

Every pick comes with its reasons: 17Lands numbers, your lane, the open signals, and how the card's rules text works with what you've taken. When the draft ends you hear a counted 40-card build with every cut named. Sealed pools get a spoken build recommendation too.

On a Mac with the bridge, Autoplay can run the whole event: it researches the set before pick one, drafts for the deck it's building (17Lands is about a quarter of each pick; hate-picks are their own call), submits the 40 and plays the matches.

Draft · pack 3
PlanSimic Jace Empower · lane UG · needs cheap interaction
P3p4Way of the Wildspeaker — GIH 53.1% (z −0.66), in lane
P3p5Inspired Tethermage — GIH 50.0% (z −1.52), fits a payoff for the plan
Choosing Way of the Wildspeaker: it works with our Inspired Tethermage and Kiora of Salt and Sand. 0:06 · real picks from a 13 Oct 2026 draft log; both rated below the set average, both taken for the plan

An autopilot that actually plays

Turn on Autoplay and it plays the match — lands, spells, targets, attacks and blocks — submitted straight to Arena's game engine through the bridge, not by driving your mouse.

  • Plays out whole lines — your next three turns against their worst-case attacks — before it commits to one.
  • Counts your planeswalkers when it blocks and when it weighs the crackback, and weighs loyalty costs against the burn they could be holding.
  • Sticks to its own plan: when the plan says hold back, it holds back. Only an all-in or lethal swing overrides it.
  • Auto-queue starts the next match with the same queue and deck. It concedes only when the board math proves the game is lost, after a countdown you can cancel.
  • No bridge? It says MANUAL REQUIRED, hands you the decision, and keeps coaching.
The top of the sidebar during autoplay: Your turn, T13, Main 1, with the Bridge chip lit. The Now card reads: Attacking with Arni, Humble Scribe, Keeper of the Quiet Hour, Mindseeker Oculus and Semester Foreseer at the opponent. Best line: board favorable, attack now, then Screeching Soulbreaker and Protege's Awakening on the next two turns. Plan formed T11; outlook 52 percent, even.
Autoplay on, bridge connected, rendered from a recorded Quick Draft board. The narration line is our example in the app's format.

Knows your deck before the first draw

Open Decks before you queue and it writes a playbook for any deck Arena has shown it: how it wins, what to do when that's disrupted, its engines and key cards. The plan card works from it on turn one.

  1. Before — Tools → Decks builds the playbook.
  2. During — the game plan follows it, turn by turn.
  3. After — Match History logs the result and a 1–10 score the coach gives its own advice.

Quick enough for Arena's clock

Board math happens on your computer; only the judgment calls go to the model. Key decisions ask twice at once — a quick answer and a deeper one — and use the deeper one only if it's back in time.

  1. Log line — read the moment Arena writes it.
  2. Board math — combat, clocks and the three-turn search, in milliseconds.
  3. Model — quick and deep answers race; 15-second ceiling. Quick decisions came back in a median 2.5 s in a live session on 18 Oct 2026.
  4. Voice — spoken on your computer.

Get started

Windows, macOS and Linux.

Coaching works the same everywhere because it only needs Arena's log. Autoplay needs the bridge for your platform.

What each platform supports and how to install it
PlatformInstallCoachingAutoplay
Windows mtgacoach-Setup.exe from GitHub Releases. Yes Player.log Yes BepInEx bridge
The installer sets the bridge up; Setup & Repair reinstalls it if it goes missing.
macOS uv tool install arenamcp, then run mtgacoach-desktop. Python 3.10 or newer; pip install arenamcp works too. Yes Player.log
Native Arena client, no Wine.
Experimental injected library
Build the bridge library once from the source (one script, Xcode command-line tools). Then let the coach open Arena, or add the Steam launch option Setup & Repair shows you. Draft-event autoplay is Mac-only.
Linux uv tool install arenamcp, then run mtgacoach-desktop. Yes Player.log
Arena on Steam with Proton; the coach reads the log inside the Proton prefix.
Via Proton BepInEx bridge
The same bridge as Windows. Setup & Repair installs it; you add WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command% to Arena's Steam launch options.
  1. Install the app for your platform, above.

  2. Turn on Detailed Logs in Arena: Options → Account → Detailed Logs (Plugin Support), then restart Arena.

  3. Open Setup & Repair in mtgacoach. It checks your install and starts your 7-day trial. Then queue up — coaching starts with your first priority.

Questions

The honest answers.

What does it read?

Arena's own Player.log, with Detailed Logs (Plugin Support) turned on. That is everything the coach knows about your game, so coaching needs nothing installed into Arena. Setup & Repair checks the setting for you.

What does autoplay need?

The bridge: a plugin that runs inside the Arena client and submits actions to its game engine — BepInEx on Windows and under Proton, an injected library on macOS. It is optional. Without it, autoplay says MANUAL REQUIRED, hands the decision back to you, and the coach keeps advising.

Where does the AI run?

On our own GPU server, reached through api.mtgacoach.com; the model is GLM 5.3. There's no per-token billing — your subscription is the whole bill — with fair-use rate limits far above what a game needs. The voice is synthesized on your computer.

What leaves my computer?

Each request sends the game facts the model needs to our server. By default the app also uploads a redacted record of each finished match — its decisions, the coach's log, the match's game events and any bug reports — so we can improve the coach from real games. Names, keys, emails, file paths and Arena account IDs are removed first.

Turn it off in Tools → Share Match Logs to Improve the Coach.

Does my subscription cover ArenaOnAir?

Yes. Paste the same Patreon key into ArenaOnAir's Premium connection. Its five free matches are separate from mtgacoach's 7-day trial.

How do I cancel?

Cancel your pledge on Patreon. Your key stops working when the pledge ends; nothing is billed here.

Is this official?

No. mtgacoach is unofficial fan software, not made or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast. Magic: The Gathering is a trademark of Wizards of the Coast LLC.
