Notes from the lock: spring
The spring floods came late this year, and for a week the upper gate stood fully open while the river went by at twice its summer depth. Nothing was lost but a few planks of the old footbridge.
Once the water fell, the gate's grooves were cleared of silt and the screw was greased. The lower gate, which had begun to stick, now runs its whole height in under a minute.
