Lateral chromatic aberration proxy for a gray image. True lateral CA magnifies the colour channels differently, so edges gain a coloured fringe; on a single channel the observable signature is a SHIFTED copy of the edge (high-pass) energy superposed on the image. Here the high-pass `v - gaussian(v, 1) is shifted by s = 1 + int(4*a) px horizontally and added back with amplitude 0.1 + 0.9*b`. Flat regions have zero high-pass, so only edges fringe -- exactly the real behaviour.
