THE LICENCE

Everything in this repository is licensed under the PolyForm Noncommercial
License 1.0.0, in the LICENSE file beside this one. The launcher, the engine
under `magmacrunch/engine/`, the tests, the build files and the documentation
alike. Every engine module carries an SPDX header saying so.

Read it, learn from it, build on it, play with it. Any noncommercial purpose
is permitted, and that includes personal projects, teaching and research.
What is not permitted is commercial use: selling it or a derivative of it,
shipping it inside a product, or running it as part of a business. For a
commercial licence, ask.

Credit survives redistribution. The licence requires anyone who passes on a
copy to carry the "Required Notice" line at the top of LICENSE with it.

The launcher was always Noncommercial, because the games it seats are. This
package contains no game code -- it finds installed games by entry point and
never imports one -- but it depends on them, and a package cannot be more
permissive than what it depends on.

WHAT THE ENGINE CARVE-OUT WAS, AND WHY IT IS GONE

Until 2026-10-15 `magmacrunch/engine/` was Apache-2.0 while the launcher was
not, and the distribution declared `PolyForm-Noncommercial-1.0.0 AND
Apache-2.0`. The stated reason was that the engine was extracted from
texastoast, which was Apache-2.0 and ships its own copy of the same code, so
relicensing the extraction would have made two copies of one thing disagree.

texastoast became PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 on 2026-10-15, so that reason
inverted: keeping this copy Apache is now what would make them disagree. The
carve-out is therefore closed rather than overruled. `LICENSE-APACHE` and
`magmacrunch/engine/LICENSE` are deleted, the 24 SPDX headers name PolyForm,
and the licence expression names one licence.

The structural rule the seam enforces is unaffected and still worth keeping:
the engine imports no game and nothing under `magmacrunch/engine/` reaches
upward. That was always good design, and it was only ever argued for on
licensing grounds as well.

A licence change is not retroactive. Every version published up to and
including 0.9.0 shipped the engine under Apache-2.0, and anyone who has one
keeps it under Apache-2.0. That cannot be withdrawn, and it is the reason this
repository no longer needs to carry the Apache text itself.

WHAT THIS DEPENDS ON

Textual, and through it Rich. Both MIT, copyright Will McGugan and
contributors, and both carry their own licences in the installed
distributions. They are needed only by the engine's terminal runtime
(`magmacrunch/engine/core/tui_game.py`).

The cabinets -- magmacrunch-george-boole, magmacrunch-thld and
magmacrunch-moonlight-drift -- are each PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0,
copyright 2026 magmacrunch media, and carry their own NOTICE files. They are
listed as dependencies so that installing the arcade installs an arcade with
something in it; nothing here imports them.

texastoast was this package's engine dependency until v0.3.0, which
internalised it. It is no longer required, installed, or imported.
