• Call: import fullseye as fs; fs.ledger.piv_line_integral_convolution(flow, length=12, upsample=4, seed=0) (to call the implementation directly, import pivops; pivops.piv_line_integral_convolution(flow, length=12, upsample=4, seed=0); from the registry, opspiv.get("piv_line_integral_convolution"))
Line integral convolution (LIC) — an image whose pattern is white noise blurred along the flow.
Vector arrows collapse when dense and miss structure when sparse. LIC averages noise along streamlines per pixel, so no choice of density is needed. Direction information is lost (forward and backward are not distinguished), so when you want to see the sense of rotation, combine it with arrows or a hue map.
Args:
flow: (2, h, w).
length: number of steps integrated along the streamline on one side. Longer is smoother, but
in places of high curvature such as a vortex core the structure gets stretched and becomes a lie.
upsample: resolution factor of the output (the grid is coarse, so it is enlarged before integrating).
seed: seed of the white noise.
Returns:
(h * upsample, w * upsample) float64, range [0, 1].
