Spring Garden Planning Guide
Spring is the perfect time to plan your garden. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, a little forethought goes a long way toward a bountiful harvest.
Choosing the Right Location
Most vegetables need at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day. Observe your yard throughout the day and note which areas receive the most light. Avoid low spots where water tends to pool after rain.
Soil Preparation
Good soil is the foundation of a healthy garden. Test your soil pH using a kit from your local garden center. Most vegetables prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Amend heavy clay soils with compost and perlite to improve drainage.
What to Plant When
Cool-season crops like lettuce, peas, and spinach can go in the ground as soon as the soil can be worked. Wait until after the last frost date for warm-season crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and squash.
Watering Tips
Water deeply and less frequently rather than giving your garden a light sprinkle every day. Early morning is the best time to water, as it allows foliage to dry before evening and reduces the risk of fungal diseases.
With proper planning and care, your spring garden will reward you with fresh produce all season long. Happy gardening!
