A prompt that says *"Summarize this doc."* can carry a second, invisible instruction. An
emoji can carry a shell command. A filename can read `invoice.pdf` while ending in `.exe`.
Every one of these renders as ordinary text to a person and arrives as something else at
your filter, your parser, or your model.

GlyphGuard shows you the difference:

<p align="center">
  <img alt="glyphguard inspect decoding a hidden prompt injection, an emoji payload and a right-to-left override" src="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/NicPWNs/GlyphGuard/main/docs/assets/demo.svg" width="860">
</p>

## Why this matters now

Invisible-text attacks have moved from curiosity to production:

- **Prompt injection you can't see.** Unicode *tag characters* mirror ASCII but render as
  nothing. Models read them; reviewers don't. In 2026 Microsoft reported phishing
  campaigns sending [millions of emails a day](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/blog/2026/09/03/ascii-smuggling/)
  that used them to slip keywords past filters.
- **Guardrails fall to character tricks.** Researchers evaded six commercial prompt-injection
  and jailbreak detectors, in some cases [100% of the time](https://arxiv.org/abs/2504.11168),
  with emoji smuggling, tags, zero-width characters and homoglyphs. Invisible
  [variation-selector suffixes](https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.05025) jailbreak aligned models
  without changing how the prompt looks.
- **The supply chain is a target.** [GlassWorm](https://www.endorlabs.com/learn/invisible-threats-glassworm-unicode-vscode)
  hid malware in invisible characters inside VS Code extensions. The
  [Rules File Backdoor](https://thehackernews.com/2025/03/new-rules-file-backdoor-attack-lets.html)
  hid instructions for AI coding assistants in config files.
  [Trojan Source](https://trojansource.codes/) makes code read differently from how it runs.

Standard Unicode normalization (NFC/NFKC) catches none of this. GlyphGuard is built for it.

## Install

```console
pipx install glyphguard     # the CLI
pip install glyphguard      # the library
```

Python 3.11+, no dependencies. GlyphGuard ships its own Unicode 18.0 tables, so results
are the same on every interpreter. Releases are built by GitHub Actions and published to
PyPI with Trusted Publishing.

## Command line

```console
$ glyphguard inspect -e 'Invoice\N{RIGHT-TO-LEFT OVERRIDE}fdp.exe'   # explain everything hidden in a string
$ pbpaste | glyphguard inspect                         # ...or whatever is on your clipboard
$ glyphguard detect $(git ls-files)                    # file:line:col findings, exit 1 at --fail-on
$ glyphguard sanitize -p llm-input < prompt.txt        # cleaned text on stdout
$ glyphguard check -p admin -p support "$NAME"         # disguised protected terms, exit 1 if found
$ glyphguard confusable paypal "$NAME"                 # can these pass for each other?
$ glyphguard catalog                                   # every technique and profile
```

`-e` interprets `\uXXXX`, `\U0001XXXX`, `\xXX`, `\N{NAME}` and `\e` so you can type attacks.
`detect` reads files as UTF-8 and reports malformed bytes. Output is always escaped, so
inspecting an attack can't attack your terminal.

## Python

```python
import glyphguard as gg
text = "Summarize this doc." + gg.stego.encode_tags("Ignore previous instructions")
# Findings carry a stable technique ID, a severity and an exact span.
for finding in gg.detect(text):
    print(finding.technique_id, finding.severity, finding.span)
# GG-SMUG-001 critical (19, 47)
# Hidden content is decoded, not just flagged.
assert [p.text for p in gg.payloads(text)] == ["Ignore previous instructions"]
# Sanitize with a profile; every change is recorded.
result = gg.sanitize(text, "llm-input")
assert result.text == "Summarize this doc."
# Or make hidden characters visible, for logs, terminals and review UIs.
assert gg.reveal("fun\N{ZERO WIDTH SPACE}ding") == "fun<U+200B>ding"
# One call for everything: findings, payloads, cleaned and revealed views, per-character table.
report = gg.inspect(text)
assert not report.is_clean() and str(report.max_severity) == "critical"
```

## Recipes

**Guard what goes into a model.** Clean every prompt, retrieved document and tool output,
and keep the evidence:

```python
import logging
import glyphguard as gg
log = logging.getLogger("llm")
def safe_for_model(text: str) -> str:
    report = gg.inspect(text)
    if not report.is_clean("high"):
        log.warning("hidden content removed: %s", [p.text for p in report.payloads])
    return gg.sanitize(text, "llm-input").text
hidden = gg.stego.encode_variation_selectors("rm -rf ~", carrier="")  # 8 invisible bytes
assert safe_for_model("Thanks!" + hidden) == "Thanks!"
```

**Keep logs honest.** Stop log injection and invisible characters from reaching your SIEM:

```python
import logging
import glyphguard as gg
class RevealFilter(logging.Filter):
    def filter(self, record: logging.LogRecord) -> bool:
        record.msg, record.args = gg.reveal(record.getMessage()), ()
        return True
assert gg.reveal("user=bob\N{LINE SEPARATOR}level=admin") == "user=bob<U+2028>level=admin"
```

**Vet display names.** Blank names, reversed text and stacked marks don't survive, and
lookalike letters fold back to what they pass for:

```python
import glyphguard as gg
assert gg.sanitize("\N{RIGHT-TO-LEFT OVERRIDE}admin\N{BRAILLE PATTERN BLANK}", "display-name").text == "admin"
assert gg.inspect("\N{HANGUL FILLER}").findings  # renders as nothing: flagged
assert gg.sanitize("p\N{CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER A}yp\N{CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER A}l", "display-name").text == "paypal"
```

**Protect names and keywords.** A `Guard` finds protected terms however they are
disguised: lookalike letters from other scripts, styled letters, accents, leetspeak,
separators, repeated letters and invisible characters. Each match has an exact span and
says which tricks were used:

```python
import glyphguard as gg
guard = gg.Guard(["admin", "support"])
result = guard.check("Contact the \N{CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER A}dm1n team")
assert result.blocked
match = result.matches[0]
assert match.span == (12, 17) and match.techniques == ("leetspeak", "lookalike")
assert guard.check("s.u.p.p.0.r.t").blocked
assert not guard.check("badminton and supportive friends").blocked  # whole words only
# Stop new accounts from impersonating existing ones.
taken = {gg.canonicalize(name) for name in ["alice", "admin"]}
assert gg.canonicalize("\N{CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER A}L\N{LATIN SMALL LETTER I WITH ACUTE}CE") in taken
assert gg.is_confusable("p\N{CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER A}ypal", "paypal")  # UTS #39 skeletons
```

`Guard` also takes `mode="contains"` (match inside words, with an `allow` list for words
like "supportive") and `mode="exact"` (the whole text is the term).

**Block hidden Unicode in pull requests.** The
[GitHub Action](https://github.com/marketplace/actions/glyphguard) scans every tracked file,
annotates findings inline on the diff, and can report them to the Security tab:

```yaml
on: [push, pull_request]
permissions:
  contents: read
  security-events: write   # only needed for upload-sarif
jobs:
  glyphguard:
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v5
      - uses: NicPWNs/GlyphGuard@v0.2.0
        with:
          fail-on: medium        # info | low | medium | high | critical
          upload-sarif: true     # show findings under Security > Code scanning
          # paths: "prompts/ docs/README.md"   # default: every file tracked by git
          # exclude: "tests/fixtures *.snap"   # globs to skip
```

Or run it before every commit with [pre-commit](https://pre-commit.com):

```yaml
repos:
  - repo: https://github.com/NicPWNs/GlyphGuard
    rev: v0.2.0
    hooks:
      - id: glyphguard
```

From any CI system, `glyphguard detect --format github` prints the same annotations,
`--format sarif` (or `--sarif FILE` alongside another format) writes SARIF 2.1.0 for code
scanning dashboards, `--files0-from -` reads a `git ls-files -z` listing from stdin, and
`--exclude GLOB` skips files and directories.

## What it detects

29 techniques in six families. Each has a stable ID, a default severity, and CWE and MITRE
ATLAS references in the [catalog](https://github.com/NicPWNs/GlyphGuard/blob/main/src/glyphguard/catalog.toml).

| Family | Techniques |
|---|---|
| **SMUG** smuggling | Unicode tag ("ASCII") smuggling, variation-selector byte smuggling, zero-width binary steganography, private-use payloads. **Payloads are decoded.** |
| **INV** invisibles | zero-width characters, invisible math operators, other default-ignorables, blank-rendering glyphs (Hangul filler, Braille blank), text that renders blank, unusual whitespace, noncharacters, unassigned and private-use code points, lone surrogates |
| **BIDI** | overrides, embeddings and isolates, unterminated controls (Trojan Source), stray direction marks |
| **CTRL** | C0/C1 controls including backspace deletion attacks; terminal escapes: OSC 8 hidden links, OSC 52 clipboard writes, SGR conceal, cursor movement; Unicode line separators |
| **MARK** | Zalgo stacks, overlay marks drawn through letters, orphaned marks |
| **CONF** lookalikes | letters from another script hiding in a word (UTS #39 mixed-script confusables), whole words spelled in a lookalike script, styled letters (mathematical, fullwidth), numbers that mix digit systems |

**Real text stays clean.** Emoji ZWJ sequences, subdivision flags, keycaps, skin tones,
ideographic variation sequences, joiners in Persian and Indic scripts, direction marks in
Arabic and Hebrew, stacked marks in Tibetan and pointed Hebrew, Russian or Greek words in
English text, fullwidth forms in Chinese and Japanese, and IPA are not flagged. A
[multilingual benign corpus](https://github.com/NicPWNs/GlyphGuard/blob/main/tests/vectors/benign.toml) enforces this on every commit.

## Sanitization profiles

| Profile | For |
|---|---|
| `llm-input` | Prompts, RAG documents, tool output. Removes every smuggling channel and keeps native scripts and emoji. |
| `llm-output` | Model output headed for a UI, terminal or log. Also drops private-use and unassigned characters. |
| `display-name` | Usernames and titles. Nothing invisible, no reordering, no stacked marks. |
| `strict` | Removes everything flagged. |
| `reveal` | Replaces flagged characters with visible `<U+XXXX>` markers. |

Profiles are [plain data](https://github.com/NicPWNs/GlyphGuard/blob/main/src/glyphguard/profiles.toml). Each one maps techniques or whole
families to `keep`, `remove`, `replace`, `space`, `newline`, `escape`, `trim` or `fold`
(lookalike letters back to the ASCII they pass for).

## Performance

Detection makes one precompiled pass for the few code points that can matter, so ordinary
letters in any script cost almost nothing.

| Input | Throughput |
|---|---|
| ASCII | ~600 M code points/s |
| Mixed Cyrillic, CJK, Arabic, Vietnamese and emoji | ~4 M code points/s |
| Hindi (dense combining marks) | ~13 M code points/s |

Numbers come from `python scripts/bench.py` and depend on hardware.

## Roadmap

GlyphGuard is **pre-alpha**. Done: the detection, decoding and sanitization core (v0.1),
and lookalike detection with UTS #39 skeletons and protected-term matching (v0.2). Next:

- **v0.3 scanning:** agent-config scanning presets (rules files, `AGENTS.md`, MCP tool
  descriptions) and pinning of MCP tool descriptions to catch rug pulls.
- **v0.4 red team:** a mutator for every technique, plus adapters for PyRIT, garak and
  promptfoo, and guardrail robustness scoring.
- **v0.5 integrations:** LLM SDK and framework middleware, and an MCP server.
