Leave image strength near 0 to actually replace what's inside the mask. Higher values keep more of what's already there, and by 0.5 on a short schedule the original object usually survives.
The mask edge is a hard boundary: whatever you ask for has to fit inside it, shadow and all, or it gets cut off. And the region is filled with your prompt rather than erased — asking for "an empty table" gets you something table-shaped, not a gap.
