normal_from_reflection — 3D optics op

• Data kinds: vector × vector → vector

• Call: import fullseye as fs; fs.ledger.normal_from_reflection(incident, reflected) (to call the implementation directly, import match3d; match3d.normal_from_reflection(incident, reflected); from the registry, ops3d.get("normal_from_reflection"))

Usage

Recover a mirror surface's normal from the incident and reflected rays (deflectometry). n ∝ (r − d), pointing against the incident ray.

Observe the reflection of a known pattern → surface normal → integrate into the specular shape. The key to shape measurement of specular (reflective) objects.

Normalises incident (incident direction toward the surface) and reflected (reflected direction leaving the surface), and returns n = unit(r − d) with its sign chosen so that n·d <= 0 (against the incidence = outward on the incident side) (a unit vector). If r == d, the zero vector. The last axis is taken as the vector, so an (N,3) batch also goes through (the sign is decided only 1 time, from the sum of the dot products over the whole batch).

Uses: build normals per pixel from the reflection image of a known pattern (a normal map), integrate them into height with integrate_normals, reproduce the appearance with render_shaded, cross-check with reflect.
