# Hoarse

A desktop email client for Linux, macOS and Windows, written in Python, that stays responsive on
mail accounts far larger than the ones most clients are tested against.

- Laid out like Thunderbird: three panes, a folder tree per account, a dense message list.
- Themed by declarative packs — a modern pack and a retro pack that genuinely look different.
- Designed against a single account holding **more than one million messages**.

**Start with the specification: [`docs/spec/README.md`](docs/spec/README.md).** It is normative.

## Install

Hoarse needs Python 3.14 and installs from PyPI with no compiler and no system
packages:

```bash
uvx hoarse            # or: pipx install hoarse  /  uv tool install hoarse
```

From a checkout, for development:

```bash
uv run hoarse
```

Versions are semantic; see [`CHANGELOG.md`](CHANGELOG.md) and
[`docs/plan/versioning.md`](docs/plan/versioning.md).

Development is split across five tracks — see [`docs/plan/parallel-tracks.md`](docs/plan/parallel-tracks.md).
