A backup holds your settings, layout and installed custom modules with their saved data. Protected with a password, it is encrypted and also holds the admin password, the SSH password and the saved Wi-Fi networks, so a new mirror can be set up from it in one step. Without a password it holds none of them: restoring keeps your current admin password, and you may need to connect to Wi-Fi again.
